323 South Division
323 South Division is the address of the Herkimer Hotel. Owner Samuel Jenks who came to Grand Rapids from Herkimer County, New York named his hotel for Nicholas Herkimer a famous revolutionary war hero and ancestor of Jenks’s wife. The Herkimer was built in two phases, with the southwest section of the building erected in 1895 and the northern/western sections added in 1907.
Architectural features
Jenks incorporated many splendid features in the hotel to provide gracious suroundings for hotel guests. Among these are:
- vaulted ceilings
- hand carved banisters
- classic woodwork
- two-story atria
- skylights
